How to assess cellular network

Cellular Network

Pre-Install Phase

During the pre-install phase, conduct a thorough walkthrough of the site to obtain signal strength readings at various locations in the parking lot or garage. Follow these steps for accurate results:

  1. Walk to the proposed locations for the EV chargers.
  2. Stand at each location and wait for 10-15 seconds for the signal reading to stabilize.
  3. Repeat the connectivity tests for all EV charger locations in the area.

Signal Strength Parameters

  • GOOD: Signal reading of -80 dBm or greater."
  • ACCEPTABLE: Signal reading between -80 dBm and -100 dBm."
  • POOR: Signal reading less than -100 dBm."

An important factor to consider when recording signal strengths is the amount of traffic present at the site. Signal strength can be impacted when more cars are parked compared to when the parking lot or garage is empty.

  • Testing on an Android

For Android devices, we recommend using the apps below. Open the apps and note the dBm reading, carrier, and Band number (e.g., Rogers, T-Mobile, AT&T).

    Network Cell Info Lite

    LTE Discovery (5G NR)

  • Testing on iOS

For iOS devices, we recommend performing signal strength tests on Android OS over iOS due to limitations in some iPhone models. If using an iPhone, follow these steps:

Enter the field test mode on the iPhone. Open the Phone app and dial *3001#12345#*. This will route the user to the field test menu

Make a note of the  rsrp0 and rsrp1 values.

Depending on the iOS version, the field test menu can have different interfaces. More information can be found in the following article: iPhone Signal Strength.

Mitigations for Poor 4G Connectivity

For EV charger locations that fall under the POOR category, a cellular network booster will be required. After installing the network booster, verify the signal strength readings at the proposed EV charger locations. Ensure that the signal strength readings at all EV charger locations fall under the GOOD or ACCEPTABLE range.
