How to decide which type of pricing rules to implement

While the dashboard's pricing engine is very powerful, we recommend simple pricing rules if you are a new site host. Too many pricing periods can confuse drivers and create frustration.

Types of Pricing

There are 3 types of pricing below. Some chargers may be free, but still require a ChargeLab account for authentication.

  • You are billed for each kWh used.
  • You are billed for the time your car is actively drawing power.

The hourly rate is adjusted based on the power drawn.

Calculation: kWh used ÷ maximum output of the charger.

Example: 21 kWh used ÷ 7 kW charger = 3 effective hours. If billed at $2 per hour, the cost is $6.

  • You are billed per minute until the car is unplugged.

    Example: 1 hour and 30 minutes at $1 per hour = $1.50.

Notifications: Receive an SMS when charging is done and fees will continue while idling.

Note: The per effective hour charging pricing rule is not a CTEP-compliant billing model.

Pricing Structures

Chargers may have different pricing structures, which can vary by location. Always check the pricing schedule in the web or mobile application before starting a charge.

  • Consistent pricing regardless of day, time, and length of charge.

Example: $1 per hour all day, every day.

  • Pricing varies by day and/or time of day.

Example: $1 per hour on weekdays, $3 per hour on weekends.

  • Pricing varies within a session.

Example: $1 per hour for the first two hours, $3 per hour for subsequent hours.

Note: Tiered pricing is not a CTEP-certified function.

  • Idle fees are charged when a car remains connected to the charger after the charging is finished. Drivers will be charged idle fees if the charger is not actively dispensing energy for over a minute. There are limits on how much can be charged as idle fees to ensure fairness, with a maximum of $1.50 (CAD and USD).

Drivers can check the idle fees before starting to charge by looking at the pricing details in the app. During a charging session, they can see the accumulated idle fees and also receive this information in the receipt.

After the charging is completed, drivers have a 15-minute grace period before idle fees start being applied. Notifications are sent to drivers through the app and SMS, alerting them when the charging is done and idle fees may apply, and again when the grace period is over and idle fees are active. Drivers can avoid idle fees by stopping the charging session within the grace period.
